Sworn translations of a driving licence are a very common type of translation for submission to official bodies and institutions.
This official document entitles a citizen to drive a specific vehicle and is issued in Spain by the Directorate-General for Road Traffic (DGT-Spanish acronym), which regulates all aspects of obtaining the licence.
It is issued in card format including the holder’s personal data as well as the category of vehicles he/she is allowed to drive. In Spain there are ten different types of driving licence according to the type of vehicle.
When is a sworn translation of a driving licence required?
Generally, in order to be able to drive abroad or in Spain with a driving licence that was not issued in the country in which you are driving, a sworn translation of the licence is required.
A foreigner in Spain can drive with his or her own licence for a maximum of six months, but if it is in another language, a sworn translation is compulsory.
This legislation varies depending on the country you are in, but it is always advisable to have a sworn translation of your driving licence at hand to avoid any administrative problems with the traffic authorities.
You can check the requirements for the validity of your driving licence in Spain at the Dirección General de Tráfico.
These sworn translations must be translated by translators appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to guarantee their veracity and legality before any official body.
These must include the stamp and signature of the sworn translator authorised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are therefore legally responsible for the accuracy of the content of the translation in relation to the original document.
