Sworn translations of an NIE are a very common type of translation for submission to foreign official bodies and institutions.
The NIE is a document that accredits your identity, personal details and nationality as a foreigner in Spain. Issued by the General Directorate of Police (Ministry of the Interior) in all Spanish cities and towns to stay in the country.
This is a personal and non-transferable sequential number assigned to foreigners to identify them in Spain. This information issued in the NIE is only written in Spanish, so it is not surprising that some foreign official bodies or institutions require a sworn translation of the NIE in order to carry out certain procedures.
When is a sworn translation of an NIE required?
A sworn translation of the NIE is necessary in a multitude of situations when carrying out various procedures abroad, such as:
- Applying for a visa
- Adoption procedures
- Applying for a residence permit
- Applying for a work permit
- Taking out health insurance
- Buying a house
- Starting a business
- Registering abroad a marriage celebrated in Spain
- Legalising a divorce abroad that has been processed in Spain
These sworn translations must be translated by translators appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to guarantee their veracity and legality before any official body.
These must include the stamp and signature of the sworn translator authorised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are therefore legally responsible for the accuracy of the content of the translation in relation to the original document.
