Rebecca, University of Durham
Education: Modern Languages and Cultures (specialising in German and Spanish) at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom
Linguistic combinations: Spanish – English
My name is Rebecca, I’m Irish and I’m currently studying for a degree in Modern Languages and Cultures (specialising in German and Spanish) at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom. If everything goes well, I’ll graduate in June 2022.
Since school I’ve always been fascinated by languages, and when I had the chance to study German as well as Spanish in my first year of university, I couldn’t pass it up. After several classes on analysis, literature and grammar, I realised that what I liked most about the course was translation. So, when I began to plan my year abroad, as a part of my university study plan, I thought about an internship at an established translation company.
My university had posted an advert for Clinter on their blog, and they’ve been sending students there for years. I was impressed by the internship opportunity they offered, as well as the company’s prestigious reputation.
« I’m more confident about my linguistic abilities. »
After six months of Erasmus studies in Cologne, Germany (where I studied translation between my two foreign languages), and a placement in a nursery in Barcelona, I was delighted to receive an internship offer and I arrived in Madrid at the end of May 2021 for three months, making it the conclusion to my year abroad. I was excited by the idea of finally acquiring professional experience at a renowned company. All the staff gave me a warm welcome.
The team’s always friendly and they take out time from their schedules to give you feedback and tips on how to improve your work. Because of this, I couldn’t have asked for better colleagues at Clinter, and there’s no doubt that they made my time here very enjoyable. Not only has my Spanish improved, but I’m more confident about my linguistic abilities now, since I’ve had the chance to translate a wide variety of documents using tools such as SDL Trados Studio.
I would recommend this internship at Clinter to anyone interested in translation, and to all those who’re looking for an enriching opportunity to improve their linguistic capabilities.
I’d like to thank the team at Clinter for having given me this incredible opportunity that introduced me to the world of translation and confirmed that this is my career of choice.
