Katie, University of Oxford
Education: Modern Languages and Literature specialising in Spanish and Italian
Linguistic combinations: Spanish – English
I’m Katie and I’m studying for a degree in Modern Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, specialising in Spanish and Italian. This year I’ve been working abroad as part of my studies. I spent the first six months working in Rome, Italy, and now I’m here in Madrid, working as an intern for Clinter.
I wanted to study modern languages and literature for the opportunities they offer, not just learning another language (or two) but also exploring the cultures of the countries in which they are spoken. I wanted to intern at a translation firm because I believed this would be the best opportunity for me to improve my linguistic skills, while also opening my eyes not just to the translation industry, but also to a wide range of other industries, such as legal and finance, which most of our customers belong to.
« I learnt a wide range of things – for example, working with new translation technology, or learning new vocabulary. »
I discovered the internship at Clinter because my university recommended it and so I applied. The process was very quick, and I began working in April 2021. The team at Clinter has been very welcoming and is always available to help me when I stumble in asking questions in Spanish. Their patience is incredible!
I’ve been able to translate a great variety of documents from a wide range of industries, in all my languages. I’ve also been able to contribute to translating documents in languages that I’m not very familiar with and, as a student of languages, I’ve enjoyed it very much. My internship at Clinter has been really interesting so far and has surpassed my expectations. If you like learning about a wide spectrum of things – for example, working with new translation technology or learning new vocabulary – in an environment that moves at a quick pace, I’d definitely recommend it!
